Stacking rocks into Cairns has personal significance to me. When climbing mountains (in my youth) a cairn placed by previous hikers to mark the trail served as a very helpful tool in keeping on the right route — a shared experience of sorts, and even when stacked in fun on a beach it states so simply a quest for order and permanence.
